But Senators in this situation have been known to leave themselves escape hatches.

The fewer escape hatches, of course, the greater the political consequences of getting it wrong, and the more support for the anti-surge resolution should actually reflect a senator's judgment that the chances of an embarrassing surge success are small. The more escape hatches, the more the Warner resolution seems simply a convenient way for pols to hedge their bets against any outcome:

After reading Senator Warner's resolution, I'm reinforced in my suspicion that the bet-hedging scenario is a plausible description of what's really going on.

The resolution says, in the first of 12 clauses::

(1) the Senate disagrees with the "plan" to augment our forces by 21,500, and urges the President instead to consider all options and alternatives for achieving the strategic goals set forth below;

Now, I'm not very imaginative, but I can think of at least seven "outs" a Senator who votes for Warner's resolution could try to use if the surge is ultimately judged beneficial: 1) 'I wanted more troops than the 21,500!' I strongly believe we shouldn't risk troops unless we have an overwhelming force advantage;' 2) 'We were trying to get the attention of this president, to change course.

Mother seeks retrial in death

And, I quote "if you send her to jail for that, then if your kid is sick and you give them say Tylenol and send them to bed and they die, then you can go to jail too". That was one of the dumbest arguments I heard. I wonder if the church was doing this for a publicity stunt. Maybe I'm just skeptical of churches that are in shopping centers.

October 2006

On, say, the night of January 23rd or the night of August 12th, witches, ghosts, and goblins are imaginary beings which only lurk, if at all, in the minds of men and women. But on the night of October 31, All Hallow's Eve, or Halloween as it is now called, these creatures come to life. They are, for at least this one night, very much real. On this night, anything is possible.

Over the years the meaning of Halloween, the power of Halloween, has become lost inside of bags of candy and behind plastic masks. The real Halloween lies dormant, hidden beneath the fallen leaves, waiting to surface.

In the past this night received more respect. To our predecessors this eve held more significance. On this night the Druids believed that Saman, the lord of the dead, called his servants to rise from their graves and haunt the earth.

dark matter

He might call and say, "What about this?" He makes suggestions: "I'd like this, I'd like that." I'm free to say I think that's a bad idea. But he is my boss so I have to defend it.

That explains a lot. ... 12:35 P.M.

Letters, 1/7: On the downward slide

Reading the Dec. 31 Lincoln Journal Star, I saw the opinion page letter concerning housing zone rules. The president of the Stone Bridge Creek Home Owner’s Association wonders how more than three unrelated persons can live in a rental dwelling when Lincoln has Municipal Code 27.03.190, which covers this situation.Having lived in the North Bottoms which is turning more and more into rental properties, I can understand what he is saying. His neighborhood is just into the beginning of a downward slide. This happens when rental owners are allowed to not maintain their properties. By this I am talking about not mowing their lawns, not shoveling their sidewalks, allowing more occupants than city code allows to live in their residences. Before long, your neighborhood will experience upholstered furniture on porches and decks.

Pills That Could Thrill in 2008

THE HEYDAY OF BLOCKBUSTER DRUG discoveries may be over, but drug makers still have breakthroughs in store in the next year, or so.

To be sure, the drug industry is less productive than a decade ago. In 2007, drug companies launched 18 new drugs, the fewest since 1983, according to the market research firm IMS Health.

And this year, regulators could approve 24 to 29 compounds, almost half the number approved in 1997.

Still, there are bright spots.

Experts helped Barron's Online identify five drugs expected to hit the market in 2008. All the drugs would improve treatment of serious medical conditions and eventually pay off.

The list includes Merck & Co.'s cholesterol drug, Cordaptive and Cardiome Pharma's heart drug, Kynapid.

Schering-Plough has the anesthesia medication sugammadex, and Roche Holding has Actemra for rheumatoid arthritis.

REMICADE(R) Becomes First Anti-TNF Biologic Therapy to Treat One ...

HORSHAM, Pa. and KENILWORTH, N.J., Nov. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Centocor, Inc., Schering-Plough Corporation, and Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma Corporation announced today that an estimated one million patients have now been treated with REMICADE(R) (infliximab), the leading anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha therapy worldwide. In fact, REMICADE has been used to treat more patients worldwide than all other anti-TNF-alpha agents combined. REMICADE was the first anti-TNF-alpha treatment approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), when it was indicated for the treatment of acute moderate to severe Crohn's disease in 1998. The indication for Crohn's disease was quickly followed by additional indications, such as rheumatoid arthritis.

"Rheumatoid arthritis derailed my life," said Ellen Shmueli, RA patient.

Obama Wins South Carolina Primary

With 99% of precincts reporting, Obama had 55% of the vote, Clinton had 27% and former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards had 18%, according to The New York Times.

Obama is hoping to become the first black U.S. president, and the South Carolina primary was closely watched as a test of how African Americans in other states may cast their votes. According to the AP, which cited polling place interviews, about half of the South Carolina voters were black, and four out of five of them supported Obama. The AP also reported that black women turned out in large numbers.

Obama, who throughout his campaign has presented himself as a unifier and consensus builder, downplayed racial and other divisions in a speech at a campaign rally. "The choice in this election is not about regions or religions or genders," Obama was quoted saying by the AP.
