Otis Federal Credit Union: As strong as its members
In April of 1954, Otis (Division) Federal Credit Union was formed to provide financial services to paper mill workers in Jay, Maine. It was started with 11 members and $55 dollars in assets. By the time of their first annual meeting in January of 1955, membership had grown to 261 members and $9,000 in assets. According to the recently rediscovered minutes of that first meeting, the treasurer was to be paid $250 over the course of the year for expenses and salary and the board of directors had the discretion to cut that amount if needed.

No Country for Old Men (R, 122 min.) The wide open Texas spaces in which this often violent movie takes place seem to have sprung filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen from their hermetic box of tricks: The brothers rein in the rococo flourishes, obsessive in-jokes and obscure leitmotifs that characterized many of their past cult favorites ("The Big Lebowski," "Barton Fink") to deliver a remarkably faithful adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's 2005 readymade screenplay of a novel, which is not so much a lament for the decay of civilization as an old man's acknowledgment that new times require new blood (often literally, in this case).

What's hot, what's not in region's job sectors

The retail sector shed 750 jobs in the North Shore Workforce area from 2001 to 2006, state data show. The losses may have been the result of the merger of Filene's and Macy's department stores.

There are some signs the retail decline may be slowing. NorthshoreMall in Peabody - the region's largest shopping center with 2,600 employees - expects to add 600 to 800 jobs by next year, when Nordstrom's is to open a new anchor store, while other stores expand. A Macy's Men's and Home Furnishings became the newest mall tenant last week when it opened at the former Lord & Taylor site. Other new tenants include Timberland, The Cheesecake Factory, and a revitalized Filene's Basement.

"Cashiers and sales workers aren't fast-growing jobs," said Eliot Winer, chief economist at the state Department of Employment and Training.

Auditors: Bridgehampton school fund exceeds limit

To protect taxpayers, state law limited districts' unreserved funds to 2 percent of the total district budget during the audit period of July 2005 to October 2006, said Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli. Bridgehampton's $1.7-million balance represented 17 percent of the district's $9.8-million budget, the audit said.

Romney pins Republican campaign hopes on business experience

I don't see how these two can do anything for the country when they keep bickering with each other. It's not about them, it's about US, it's not about who becomes the first woman president or the first black president, it's about AMERICA. If John Edwards, who is the only person who has a plan for this country, does not get the nomination, i am voting republican, because these two are too immature to lead this country.

Horse racing: Method in the madness for backing 28-1 Don't Be Daft

The Thyestes is usually run in testing conditions, so it is no surprise light weights have dominated. The highest winning weight in the last six years has been 10st5lb, so backers should really be looking towards those nestling in the bottom half of the handicap.

Newbay Prop, who has 10st8lb, is the general 4-1 favourite after landing Leopardstown's Paddy Power Chase for big handicap specialist Tony Martin. But at 28-1 with Hill's the only runner that gets in on bottom weight of 10st looks interesting. It is inviting comment to put up one with the name of Don't Be Daft (2.45), but there is method in the madness. Trained by John Joseph Murphy, whose former champion two-mile chaser Newmill takes on Kicking King earlier on the card, this eight-year-old won two hunter-chases last season, including over the Gowran three miles in heavy ground.
