Baltimore tries to break free of Rust Belt image

Baltimore left the Rust Belt behind years ago, but local economic development marketers think the metro area has yet to shed the reputation of a struggling manufacturing hub.

They want to get out-of-town companies and locals to think of the Baltimore region as an equal of affluent Seattle, Denver and San Diego, rather than besieged Cleveland and Detroit, its historical peers.

The Economic Alliance of Greater Baltimore, a nonprofit partnership between government and business to encourage economic growth, released a "progress report" last night that makes the argument by marshaling facts about changes in the Baltimore area since the start of the decade.

Tuberculosis Patient Forced Into Quarantine

The patient, Armenio Teodoro, 47, is being held under a court order, which the state obtained several weeks ago. The Department of Health said it took the extraordinary action to protect the public and the patient.

Undercover officers from the Wahiawa Crime Reduction Unit found Teodoro at a home on Ihiihi Street Thursday morning.

The Department of Health requested police help after Teodoro resisted health workers, who brought his daily medication to his home on Tuesday.

"And he was lost to follow up, and he was found around a crack house and he was confrontational, and we thought things would only get worse if we didn't intervene," said Dr. Jessie S. Wing, of the state TB Control Program.

Court documents said Teodoro was diagnosed with tuberculosis and treated while jailed for assaulting his father.

Mane attraction: What about me?

Oh, how the mighty hath fallen.

Experts say the cat, once worshiped as a god in ancient Egypt, is now suffering from an image problem. The result is a movement within the pet-products and -care industry to promote kitty equality.

The pet business, it seems, has gone to the dogs.

More than a third of the country's 90 million cats have not been to a vet in the past year, according to a survey by the American Pet Product Manufacturers Association. Even though there are 20 percent more cats in America than dogs, because cat people tend to own more than one, Americans simply spend more on their dogs. During the past 12 months, for instance, dog owners spent an average of $217 on food while cat owners spent $188.

"Cats are not highly valued in our culture," says Donna Mlinek, feline programs manager for the Denver Dumb Friends League.

Greeley Women Thrive In Own Home Health Care Biz

People told Denise Swingle she couldn't start a home health care business because she was "just a nurse." She smiles when she talks about it because she now leads one of the top-rated home health care companies in the country.

Swingle started Caring Hearts Home Health six years ago and since opening, it has been deficiency-free in state recertification surveys, which audit agencies to make sure they properly care for patients.

After working as a registered nurse for two home health companies that closed their doors, Swingle and several of her friends decided to continue caring for their patients and start their own home health agency.

Frustrated by home health care companies that kept closing, the women decided that if they had their own company, they couldn't be closed down.

Rancher: Cloning equals better beef product

Charlo rancher Larry Coleman prepares a shot Thursday afternoon for one of the cows in the herd at the Coleman Limousin Ranch. Coleman invested in cloning a prize bull in 1999 and is still awaiting FDA approval to market meat products from cloned animals. The agency moved a step closer to full approval last week.

Report Summary

This report documents the crippling barriers such families face in pursuing a goal enshrined in America’s founding document—happiness. Those barriers center around a simple fact. With only rare exceptions, a heterosexual couple where one partner is foreign, one a U.S. citizen, can claim the right to enter the U.S. with a few strokes of a pen.2 They need not even marry: they need only show to a U.S. consulate abroad that they intend to do so and have met at least once before in their lives. (Waivers of the latter rule are possible.)

In practice, U.S. immigration is filled with obstacles for many who seek to enter. Any binational family may encounter injustices and bureaucratic barriers on the road to reunification. A flawed and irrational system demands overhaul. But a lesbian or gay couple cannot even claim basic rights.
