War as a Spectator Sport
It started Dec. 16, 1944, as a German offensive in Belgium's Ardennes forest and lasted until Jan. 25, 1945. More than a million troops fought in the battle, including about 600,000 Germans, 500,000 Americans and 55,000 British. This was the snowbound fight so famously depicted in 2001 in the Emmy Award-winning miniseries "Band of Brothers." The term "bulge" refers to the salient that the Germans initially put into the Allies' line. The Gap, which has been hosting the event for more than 20 years, has a connection to the Battle of the Bulge because the 28th Division, now part of the Pennsylvania National Guard, was one of the units that took part in the battle. "The 28th Division took the brunt during the first few days of the Battle of the Bulge," Shaw said. "They were right in the center of it.

Between the Lines Latest Post | Last 10 Posts | Archives Social networks: The new pulse of the Internet Posted in: General Web Technology Social networking I ran across a post from Rich Miller at Data Center Knowledge noting that Akamai's content delivery network is handling 1 million rich media requests per second from social networking sites such as Facebook, MySpace and Bebo. Much of the traffic comes from applications maker such as Slide and RockYou with tens of millions of users. ComScore released its November 2007 numbers for widget consumption as another indicator that the widgets are becoming like blood flowing through arteries of the Internet. In fact, content is becoming more modularized and distributable, and the lines between applications and objects are blurring.
Senator Conrad hosts energy roundtable
Already Broin Brothers of SD are converting a corn ethanol plant in NE Iowa to a cellulosic process. This will use biomass and take the starch out of it for ethanol production. NDSU and North Dakota have incredible potential for this research in biomass production and Fargo can help with some of our raw materials here. Supporting conservation and development of more home grown, renewable energy is not only good for national security, it's better for the environment, good for our economy. .
CD Reviews
Now, reissued with a new DVD of recent concert footage and promotional videos, you can watch and listen to what the man says on the deluxe version of Memory Almost Full.On his previous album, Chaos And Creation In The Backyard, McCartney exhibited a renewed concentration on his craft, the result of a disciplined approach to songwriting, performance, and production. On Memory Almost Full, he preserves much the same focus, yet his performances yield a bit more spontaneity and spunk. Tracks like "Only Mama Knows" and "Nod Your Head" rock and rumble with a youthful exuberance. "Dance Tonight" jangles to a catchy mandolin riff and foot-stomping beat. "That Was Me" bustles along to a playful melody. These are but a few examples why this effort not only stands as a solid McCartney album, but also as one of the year’s best. The DVD included in this deluxe version does have its merits, but most of the material will appeal primarily to McCartney completists.
Campbell tipped to replace Terry
Campbell at least managed to join up this time around but subsequently missed training on Tuesday with an Achilles complaint. Although the 33-year-old Portsmouth player now seems to have got over that problem, there must be some concern that by playing against Estonia, which he surely has to do in order to re-acclimatise himself with the international game, he will put his fitness at risk for the Russia encounter, when England need a draw to move to the brink of a place in next summer's finals. With Jamie Carragher retired, Wes Brown back at Manchester United nursing a knee injury and Jonathan Woodgate so out of form at Middlesbrough he did not even make the squad, McClaren's only other options are to introduce uncapped Everton defender Joleon Lescott or move Micah Richards, earmarked for the right-back slot, into a central position and bring in Phil Neville to fill the gap created by the switch.
Meat-Axe Justice
So many black males are going to prison now that it is a black rite of passage; their forced surrender to reality of justice in America. In nine states, up to 40% of black males are not permitted to vote because their citizenship has been taken away. Of course, now there are over a million black males in prison, but is anyone troubled by this? Not really, and besides, the good people of Tehachapi are begging bread from a flush-with-money prison system to build their hospital. Doesn't this strike anyone as even a tiny bit odd? Since many claim scripture for guidance, don't you think there is some counsel therein for conscientious citizens? What about a cruel David and the little ewe lamb? Do we have the wit to discern and repent when timely truths visit? David did, to his credit.
