Monday wild card

You need a Huckleberry pie slapped up side your head ...

Howard Martinson (re: GoZZZer Ranch boat flap): The gent who told me they were going to pump the gas into the Lake was wearing a GoZZZer Ranch golf shirt, and from all appearances was one of the crew members on the boat.

DFO: This morning's Huckleberry tells of another GoZZZer chimpanzee cutting off a car as he made an illegal turn from Fourth onto I-90. And this afternoon, I learned that a woman in a GoZZZer suburban double-parked on Sherman, fuhcryinoutloud, to drop off a brood of kids at Rogers Ice Cream. Seems she didn't have the time to pull around the corner and park. I'll let you decide who to believe. Me? I'm putting my money down on Howard, all the way. (BTW, you can read GoZZZer Ranch propaganda about the project, which was named after homesteader John Gozzer here, about company HQ in the old Blackwell House here, and about its Arrow Point impact here.)

A talented student rebuilds his life after battling depression - and ...

On the evening of Sept. 28, at an apartment complex in King of Prussia, a tragedy and a miracle occurred 2.5 seconds apart.

The tragedy took place when Jordan Burnham, 18, a senior just nominated to the homecoming court at Upper Merion High School, jumped out his ninth-floor window.

The miracle happened 90 feet below, when he hit the ground at 50 m.p.h. - and survived.

Jordan has no recollection of going out the window. Even though he was suffering from depression, neither he nor anyone close to him ever expected him to do something so impulsive, so lethal.

"I had everything to live for," he says now.

Today, 114 days later, Jordan's body remains badly broken. With the help of three therapists, he stood on his right leg last week for 60 seconds.

The 2008 Forecast: Cloudy, With Intermittent Sun

Another new year is upon us and it begins with degrees of apprehension in various quarters. Sales in the residential housing market have slowed to a crawl, credit is tight, and home fuel and gas prices have shot up sharply in the last year, fueling rumbles about a possible national recession.
While that information has been tough to digest, there are other positive notes to consider, such as employment levels remaining steady. And even if the economy dips, the Corridor area enjoys what might be considered blanket protection due to the overwhelming presence of that ultimate corporate headquarters, the federal government - which will soon dump even more jobs into the region when the effects of the much anticipated Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) start shifting.
To gain keener insight, The Business Monthly asked business and government leaders in the Corridor and the state for their thoughts about 2008:

Walt Townshend, president, Baltimore Washington Corridor Chamber
In a word, the first half of 2008 will be ...

Giants kicker enjoys spotlight

Three of his four missed field goals and two missed extra points dotted the first half of the schedule. But he came on to miss only one field goal the second half.

For a guy who bounced around NFL Europe and the Canadian Football League for two years before landing with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2004, he'd had a pretty good stretch before things went awry last week. But, at least inwardly, his confidence never wavered. The exterior was another story.

The second miss, yanked wide left after holder Jeff Feagles got a high snap from Jay Alford into good position, was especially deflating.

"He just got down on himself," Feagles said. "I was trying to be like a big brother, bring his spirits up. I said, 'If you get another chance, you're gonna make this one.' "

Once Eli Manning threw a final incompletion at Steve Smith in overtime, Tynes ran out before coach Tom Coughlin had time to look for him.

Sports Medicine Emerges as Leading Authority in Field It Helped ...

PARSIPPANY, N.J., Aug. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Wolters Kluwer Health, a global provider of drug and medical information services and content to the healthcare and pharmaceutical industries, announced that Adis Sports Medicine has achieved the highest Impact Factor ranking in its category, making it the most frequently cited journal by researchers on the subject of sports medicine.

Launched in 1984 when sports medicine was still in its infancy, Sports Medicine was the first journal to focus on publishing review articles on the topic of sports science. All during that time -- with the same founding editor at the helm -- its editorial has stayed true to the fast-growing field and, although in the past few years it has been a serious contender, this is the first year it has taken the top Impact Factor slot.
